Last month’s Notebook Navigation focused on a poem by the great Ada Limón. However, you don’t need to be poet laureate to create a poem that is both technically skillful and heartfelt in its pathos.

The Notebook Navigation series is intended to be a little reminder to write something in your notebook today, a quick refresh for your creative writing process. Today, we will look no further than the new issue of Wild Roof Journal for our source of inspiration.

One of the striking aspects of poetry is it potential to bring together seeming opposites. We can think back to Literature 101 and the identification of concrete and abstract language, as one example. A few lines of poetry can break down the distinctions that get solidified in our everyday experiences: inside/outside, big/small, surface/depth, self/other.

One of the reasons I appreciate Francis de Lima’s poem “Hadalpelagic (that forgets me, that remembers me)” is its consideration “beyond the anvil of dualism.” Let’s take a look!
